One of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2023 and 2021, Bee’s Knees follows a speakeasy style bar concept set in the Prohibition era in the U.S. and promises gregarious hospitality and a memorable time. The interior features exposed brickwork and subdued lighting. Following the Prohibition era underground style, the exterior is simply a bright yellow door with a sign for “The Book Store.” Bartenders Toru Ariyoshi and Keisuke Yamamoto craft creative concoctions using classic Japanese ingredients like hoji tea and yuzu to craft one-of-a-kind cocktails.

Bar K Ya

Popular among local youngsters, Bar K Ya has a traditional and tranquil environment with a small Japanese garden. They have several branches, but their main branch is located within a 5 minute walk of the Millennials Kyoto. Their cocktails usually cost around 1000 yen for a glass, but although it is a bit pricey, the calm Japanese-style interior, indoor garden view and pleasant service make this a place worth visiting on your trip.


Kokodenome has excellent food and drinks and their concept is geared towards welcoming students, so the prices are cheaper than at other bars. Although they don’t have an English menu, the staff is friendly and willing to assist you with your order. It is a welcoming spot for tourists despite being more of a local bar.


Ue is a rooftop bar from which you can see Kamo River. They frequently hold DJ events and events for artists and have a gallery downstairs. Unfortunately due to Kyoto city regulations, they are only open in warm seasons. The business will be closed from November until spring with plans to resume operations in the spring.
