Top Plum Blossom Spots in Kyoto

While Tokyo is world-famous for its cherry blossoms, there is a lesser known flower that demands attention. Many of the tourists flooding into Kyoto are missing the beauty of plum blossoms, or ume. Until the Heian period (794~1194), it was reported that plum blossoms were celebrated as a symbol of the new spring, instead of the currently well-loved cherry blossoms, or sakura. As is the case for most of Japanese culture, Kyoto is THE best place to see plum blossoms. From mid-February till mid-March, a number of spots across the city are visited by locals, blooming with unforgettable colors and scents. Why don’t you join this ancient celebration by visiting these recommended plum blossom spots in Kyoto?
